Who is Chef Kimbrough?

Submitted by: Marsha Dianne Drane

On July 1st, 1964, a new legacy began when Timothy Kimbrough entered this world. He came into a family of 3 brothers and one sister. Tim was always a jovial person who never met a stranger but in his early adulthood, around age 22, he met up with a destiny that was determined to defeat him. Hanging with an undesirable crowd, he started using alcohol and drugs, but thanks to two of his brothers' intervention, he got much-needed help. On February 16, 1983, his sister drove him to the Fairbanks Hospital Drug and Alcohol facility for a 6-month in-house program and 6 months of therapy. After 6 months of the in-house program, he discovered God and joined his mother’s church, Olivet Missionary Baptist Church, and became active in the choir. Being raised by a single mom without help from his father caused him to think as he got older about other underprivileged youth and their struggles. He didn’t want them to experience what he did so he started coaching his 6-year-old son and other kids at the Douglass Little League. First, he started his son with baseball and football, then came other kids he got into the program. In that same year, he was asked to coach 5th and 6th grade basketball at the IPS School 74.

That same year, his 6-year-old decided that he wanted to play football so Tim joined the Indianapolis Police Athletic League (PAL Club) and enrolled “little Tim”. Because of Tim’s constant encouragement, the sky was the limit for his son who ventured on to play football in Junior High. Warren Central High School was next for “little Tim” in 2009 where he was runner-up to “Mr. Football”. In 2013, he was the first football player from Warren Central High School to be named to the Army All-American All-Star game as the 3rd best linebacker in the country. All this time Tim coached his other sports and trained his son who ended up at The University of Georgia from 2013-2016.

His full-time job of 42 years at Indiana University Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, IN as a cook caused him to realize his second love – cooking. The hospital was impressed with him so much that they afforded him the opportunity to attend Culinary School at Indiana Wesleyan for a year after which he received a certificate. He continued his love of cooking by developing his own recipes. This morphed into a family member seeing his potential and became his manager who suggested that he do a cookbook with his own style of cooking some of his favorite dishes and showing the world his love of cooking
